8th October 2019 Windsurfing: Alton Ressy Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: F2 - F4 Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny / cloud Max Speed: 18.7 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 9.4 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Went to Alton as tides were poor on the river and off shore at sea. Wind was light even though forecast said 15-20mph. Had to wait an hour for it to get to 12kts at 2pm so a bit late as Ressy shuts 5.30. Set up my newly acquired Slingshot foil, which supposedly is a learning foil with the very large 76cm (20cm chord) front wing and 90cm mast. Had the summer on a RRD foil which I found technically difficult for a heavy weight. It was way too sensitive. It was hooked up to my RF91 Exocet foil bd / 8.5 Goya Mark sail. Straight after launch the wind freshen and had a full flight right across the water cutting well up wind. Brilliant! The foil is much easier to fly than the RRD for me anyway. Think light weights are fine. Had several nice runs with the wind blowing westerly. A change in direction SW, messed me up a bit and caused my first exit via the front door! The wind freshened even more, so was well over powered for 10 mins. The foil was kangarooing a bit, as I couldn't stop it flying. Had another wipeout trying to get in the rear straps. Thankfully the wind eased a bit, but not quite enough to fly without pumping. Played with the setting of the sail mast a bit and found a higher boom set and mast base at 135cm worked pretty good on the day. Started to try so stalling flights which worked brilliant, just keeping the foil mast 50%. Massive improvement, but to be fair having persevered with the RRD, this foil was always going to be easier. The low speed flying ability is great when you are tired. Speed was predictably slower. Grounded out a few times scratching the downward facing wing tips, which is a pain. The RF91 foil board is brilliant for slam downs when the foil breech the surface. Am still trying to get as comfortable on a foil as fin, but it didn't happen today. I was in that stupid tentative bet over stance I hate a lot of the time, constantly watching the nose. So much so I hit one of the dinghy racing markers full pelt. Lucky no damage. Pretty comfortable on a foil now so looking forwards to sailing the bigger rivers now. Last one off the reservoir so wasn't too popular with staff lol! My GW60 watch died a death flooded with water, so disappointed. |
